Hi, I just wanted to let you guys know that if you dont have the book yet I found it at Walmart. I looked online at Amazon and it was $12 something. I decided to check Walmart on line to see if they had it and they do. Its only $7.89 and they carry it online and in stores. Just thought it might be worth sharing. I am about half way finished, and it has been a little hard to follow at times. I think it is interesting but the author skips around a lot with other thoughts and stories so it doesn't suck you in like some of the other books we've read. Since it is short, maybe the next person should go ahead and pick the next book? Am I next Rita? Let me know.
I have to say that I think this Chris "Alex" character is a little nuts. I thought that the Alaskan writer who drunkenly interpreted Alex's actions had it pretty right on. It is always good to be prepared and personally I think it is crazy to do what Alex did. I will bet that in the end Alex was regretting a lot of his decisions.~Sarah

Yes Jamie I feel the same way, I am second-guessing my choice of book, sorry guys!! I do find it interesting imagining being in his shoes...trying to figure him out, I do think he was a little looney. Yes Sarah your up, let us know when you pick your book!!!

I'll post more as I read more....I'm not even half way =(

Yes it is interesting but the author jumps around a lot. Chris "Alex" is/was way crazy for doing what he did. I just think first of all it is crazy to hitchhike! My husbands cousin (a girl) does it all the time and lives on the streets. Just crazy to me!!
Rita dont feel bad for picking this book. It's something different! Jamie

Ok I finished the book tonight!! I really got into it once Chris "Alex's" dad started talking about him. I liked that they talked about that they used to go backpacking and that this wasnt something new and out if the blue that he decided to do. True he was not fully prepared and that is what caused his death but I guess he died doing what he loved even if that is not what he was set out to do. I did like the little old man Ronald Franz and thought it was really sweet that he asked Alex if he could adopt him. I think I would give the book a 3 out of 5 stars just because it was very jumpy but in the end was a good book. Jamie

OK, I'm behind in my reading gals but I promise to do my catch-up this weekend and finish this book, it's pulled me in now thankfully =) I am really moved by the part I just read, where Ron Franz gives his account of knowing Alex! I am beside myself with how attached this old guy got to Alex and the dramatic change in his life he made as a result of their time together. I am also realizing now that Alex is really a neat person that leaves a huge footprint on anyone he comes into contact with. Here is an exerpt that I just LOVED:
The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.
WOW, that really says so much and I have to admit is true for me. Recently, since having Marina, I've realized what a pure joy it is to see her grow and change and learn new things, it really is like every day is a new experience and different sun....so beautiful and captivating. I also have always had a passion for seeing new horizons and new places, moving around with my husband has been such a blessing in that I've been able to satisfy some of that hunger for new experiences!! We both love to travel and hope to do more of it in the future and have even talked about at some point going on a traveling adventure and just living from place to place..not camping out with the wildness that Alex did but in a camper with a bank full of money for conveniences =) We'll see if that ever comes to pass but anyways I'm finding myself enjoying this book now! And the way the write describes all the details of where Alex is or the scenes at hand is remarkable, really paints a good picture and feel, example the description of the Bajada on page 49, I felt like I really could imagine standing on the desolate streets with the tumbleweeds blowing past me =)
Interesting too to think about the reason we read books in the 1st place, to escape reality for a bit, go on an adventure and experience another place & time, meet people we otherwise never would...well at least those are the reasons I read =)

Lemme get back to reading!!

OK, I finished the book Saturday but have not had time to comment!!! I loved it, and yes Sarah you are right it was so much better after you realize his death was not simply unpreparedness. It was also so crazy to know that there were people so close to him the entire time. It kinda makes me think of our life and how we can get into a day or season that seems so hard or difficult and not realize how close things are to brightening up or getting better =) It also made me want to read some of the stuff Chris was reading like Thoreau or Tolstoy, I might give it a go for my in-between reading though I have quite a collection of those in-between books already lol. OH I was also glad that Chris did actually get humbled by his voyage, it seems at the end he was ready to live a life with family and friends again and not alone ha. All in all I ended up really enjoying this book, though I truly enjoy reading a good fiction story I get a different kind of fulfillment reading a story that actually happened so I think I'd give it 4 stars =))) Onto the next book then.
